Disney announces its new slate at D23- Cinema express

Disney’s D23 expo saw a slew of updates and announcements for its upcoming slate of series and films. The first day saw the release of the trailer of the Little Mermaid’s live-action remake. The makers also announced Barry Jenkins’ new Lion King movie titled Mufasa: The Lion King. Pixar announced a sequel for Inside Out and shared the first look of a new film titled Elemental. The studio also announced a new space adventure flick. Titled Elio, the film is currently set for spring 2024. 

Day two’s two-hour panel started with Walt Disney Chairman Alan Bergman unveiling the new Disney 100 logo. The first official announcement came in the form of Andor getting greenlit for season two and the yet-to-stream season one will reportedly be a 24-episode spy thriller. The series will stream on Disney+ Hotstar from September 21. Warwick Davis announced a new series titled Willow and its cast includes Joanne Whalley, Erin Kellymanm and Ellie Bamber. Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni then confirmed that a new series of six shorts, Tales of the Jedi will be out on October 26. Meanwhile, The Bad Batch season 2 will premiere on January 4, 2023. There will also be a new Star Wars series titled Skeleton Crew starring Jude Law. The first trailer of The Mandalorian season 3 was unveiled. An emotional Harrison Ford shared the trailer of Indiana Jones’ fifth instalment without affirming its release date. 

The Marvel Studios panel saw the release of Ironheart’s first trailer. Starring Dominque Thorne as Riri Williams, the character will first appear in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Her standalone series debuts in Fall 2023. Then the makers of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania confirmed the release date to be February 17, 2023. A new project titled Werewolf by Night was unveiled with Michael Giacchino on board as director and Gael Garcia Bernal playing the werewolf. The series will stream from October 7. The trailer for Secret Invasion was also released. Marvel also confirmed that Don Cheadle’s Armor Wars is still on while Ke Huy Quan has been roped in for a role in Loki season 2. While casting confirmations weren’t made, the studio confirmed that Fantastic Four will be directed by Wandavision filmmaker Matt Shakman. Marvel also affirmed that Daredevil: Born Again will begin filming in 2023 and will have 18 episodes. The new logo for the upcoming Captain America film, Captain America: New World Order was also unveiled. Marvel also revealed the cast of The Thunderbolts which will be out on July 26, 2024. It will consist of Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Yelena (Florence Pugh). 

The cast of Avatar 2 took over the stage while James Cameron made his appearance via a video byte. Footage from the new film was shared and actor Sigourney Weaver, whose character died in the first Avatar film, shared that she will be voicing Jake and Neytiri’s adopted daughter. Avatar: The Way of Water will hit screens on December 16. 

Three Indian titles were also revealed at D23. A new version of the famous Indian epic Mahabharata, produced by Madhu Mantena, Mythoversestudios and Allu Entertainment, was announced. Karan Johar’s celebrity chat show Koffee With Karan was renewed for season 8 which will be produced by Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Anisha Baig for Dharmatic Entertainment Production. Johar, Mehta and Somen Mishra are also producing a new drama series titled Showtime.
